I am honored to be the 2019 recipient of the Allan Slaight Award, in the category Sharing Wonder. According to the Magicana website, this award recognizes “exceptional performances, by exceptional artists” and is accompanied by an engraved iPad and a $15,000 prize. Previous winners of this award are: Penn & Teller, Darcy Oake, Derek DelGaudio, and Michael Carbonaro.

It is a genuine honor to be included in this fine company of magicians, all of whom I greatly respect. 

 

 

While it is common in other performing arts (e.g. music and dance) to have benefactors directly support the growth of worthy artists, in the field of magic this is virtually non-existent. I admire Allan Slaight’s commitment to inspiring magical artists so that we may create even more robust works.

A big thank you to David Ben and Julie Eng for inviting Allan Slaight and his family to my Chamber Magic show, when we produced a one-week run at the Luminato Festival in Toronto. That was a wonderful opportunity to meet Allan, and I am delighted that both he and the selection committee regarded my performance highly enough to bestow the Sharing Wonder award upon me this year.

On June 17, 18 and 19, I performed six shows (two each night) at the George Brown house, a National Historic Site that usually is off-limits to the public. The house was completed in 1876 and restored to its former glory - an excellent location for my old-school brand of parlor magic. Toronto’s Luminato Festival is a big deal. Each summer, hundreds of performing artists are invited to Toronto to participate in a 10-day celebration of the arts. Since the festival’s inception seven years ago, “magic” has been included in the programming thanks to the efforts of David Ben and Julie Eng. International stars of magic such as Juan Tamariz, Max Maven and Mac King have performed their full shows there in previous years.

 

This year I was asked to present “Chamber Magic®” at Luminato, and I’m glad I accepted the invitation. On June 17, 18 and 19, I performed six shows (two each night) at the George Brown house, a National Historic Site that usually is off-limits to the public. The house was completed in 1876 and restored to its former glory – an excellent location for my old-school brand of parlor magic. In fact, the show was situated right in George Brown’s parlor — you can’t beat that!

Canadians are all aware of George Brown as the prominent Father of the Confederation, politician, and founder of the national newspaper The Toronto Globe, now known as The Globe and Mail.

When attendees entered the foyer, they were met by Luminato staff who directed them to the showroom.

 

On opening night, there were three reporters at the show, and I could feel the excitement in the room. Fortunately everything “clicked” and both shows that night were “hot.” Not only were the audiences lively and enthusiastic, but the room itself also happened to be brutally hot! Since the house is 137 years old, its ventilation system was not working, and I was soaked in sweat by the end of the night. There’s nothing like a sopping wet tuxedo! We remedied this on nights two and three, with a portable and silent floor fan that provided circulation and relief.

Fortunately the reporters weren’t phased by the heat, and wrote some seriously positive reviews of the show. Here are some excerpts:

“I got the sense that Cohen, a graduate of prestigious schools, must have loved magic so much – to the exclusion of all other things – that he chose to pursue it professionally. His love shows in the work. He’s buoyantly happy to be performing, twinkling with delight as he shows us card tricks, mentalism, and other close magic. It’s clear that he’s in his happy place as he gathers the audience close to watch, really watch, watch from a foot away as he makes cards perform miraculous feats – including re-arrange themselves inside a box, inside my blazer’s pocket, into precisely the same order as the cards in the box in the blazer pocket of a guy standing six feet away from me. It was amazing to watch.

David Ben and I were invited to be panelists for a Lunchtime Illuminations discussion, as part of the Luminato Festival. We were joined onstage with John Placko, a molecular gastronomy chef who showed us some of his own magic. He changed the flavor of lemons from sour to sweet, changed the flavor of a newly-opened bottle of red wine (using nano-technology!), and fed us liquid nitrogen ice cream that was pretty damn good. The ice cream was so cold, though, that my tongue stuck to it and it took a few seconds to release. Now that’s magic.

 

Magicana also invited two other magic acts from Spain to participate in Luminato this year.

And I also was happy to see Rafael Benetar in my final show at Luminato. His show “Compositions” began after I left Toronto so I unfortunately missed his performance of music and magic:

Finally, I felt obliged to drink some Canada Dry while actually in Canada…

And I had my very first visit to Tim Horton’s donut shop and tried their coffee and a maple donut…

Normally off-limits to the great unwashed, Brown’s stately home was the venue chosen by Luminato’s go-to magic man, David Ben, to showcase the extraordinary legerdemain of American magician Steve Cohen.

The setting proved an apt backdrop for Cohen’s act, which owes a considerable debt to Johann Hofzinser, the 19th-century Austrian known as the father of card magic. At New York’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel, Cohen’s unofficial home, he typically entertains audiences of no more than 50. For the Toronto cohort, only slightly larger, the diminutive Cohen – nattily attired in morning coat, waistcoat and striped trousers – deftly stick-handled his way through a series of jaw-dropping tricks, each seemingly more difficult than the last.

Given the intimacy, sitting only a few feet away from the cloth-covered table on which Cohen performs, you’d think you’d be able to deconstruct – to see precisely how he does what he does. You’d be wrong. The expressions I heard most from dazzled patrons were “how the bleep did he do that?” and “Oh my God.” Which may be why Woody Allen, one of dozens of notable personages for whom Cohen has performed, was moved to call his show “a religious experience.”

In one routine, Cohen vaulted playing cards into a three-somersault flip and landed them exactly between two previously identified cards – in a deck shuffled and cut by audience members. In another – a trick learned, he said, in Japan – he collected three rings from the crowd and, stirring them in a glass, managed to link in a chain, and then unlink. In another, he managed to replace a U.S. coin under a bowler hat with a five-pound brick.

Later, he had us write our names and three interesting facts about ourselves on slips of paper. From these, duly collected and shuffled, he picked several and started identifying their rightful owners: an athlete who finished second in a 2009 snowboarding competition; a German-born woman who was a surviving twin; a man who planned a snorkelling holiday; the name of a pet dog; a dessert someone’s mother had baked. I have a vague clue about how this ostensible feat of Kreskinesque mentalism might be done, but my lips are sealed.

The most spectacular coup, in my judgment, was something Cohen called the Think-a-Drink trick, which apparently dates from the years of vaudeville. Again using slips of paper, he had us write the name of our favourite drink. From the collection, five were randomly selected by audience members, so Cohen had no say in what drinks were chosen. Then, as each drink was declared – sequentially, a mojito, Blue Gatorade, a Manhattan, a cabernet sauvignon and a chocolate milkshake – Cohen used a magic teapot to pour a shot glass full of the exact drink.

All of this, by the way, delivered with not a little panache, off-the-cuff wit and tidbits of personal biography (Cohen spent six years living in Tokyo and is fluent in Japanese).

Not surprisingly, all of his Luminato shows are sell-outs. But he’s a heck of a reason to go to New York.
